Three people were killed in two shootings in two weeks at a Westside trailhead

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – Abreeza Zeeger, her bag billowing in the wind, picked up trash Monday at the Enchanted Hills trailhead on Tucson’s west side. Finding alcohol cans was not a surprise to her.

She can be found cleaning up trash in the morning almost every day. She said she often sees teenagers and young adults partying with alcohol and pot.

“I was out here picking up trash while they were still partying in the morning,” she said.

She said the events have been going on for three decades and that younger people have attended every weekend for years.

She said that five years ago in her neighborhood, about a mile away, people drove by and shot.

“Maybe they don’t realize or don’t care that bullets don’t stop just 30 yards away. They can travel,” Zegeer said.

She said people were also shooting at the trailhead and there were holes in visible signs.

Over the past two weeks, three people were killed, including a minor, in two shootings at the Enchanted Hills trailhead near 36th Street and Mockingbird Lane.

There are currently three separate memorials dedicated to those who died.

Last Saturday, Tucson police said there was a shooting at the trailhead around 2:30 a.m. 20-year-old Jesus Fierro was shot and killed. They said 20-year-old Freddie Hudson was also shot and taken to the hospital, where he died.

Zegeer said there was still blood visible at the trailhead.

“No one wants to hear a young person die like this,” she said.

Exactly two weeks earlier, TPD reported that 17-year-old Keven Yanez Acuñez died near the same trailhead, also around 2:30 a.m. He later died in a nearby hospital.

“I’m sorry this happened, but as one person there’s nothing I can do about it,” Zegeer said.

The Tucson Police Department said it is still investigating the two situations but has found no information that the two stations are related. So far they say they have made no arrests.

TPD said their Southside division is working with Pima County to enhance security measures in the area and this had been happening before the shooting.

“There will be more patrols here, starting around 10 a.m. and coming every few hours,” Zegeer said she hopes for.
