Waco police report an 8% drop in crime rates in September, but an increase in robberies

BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT:

Ricky Terry has lived in West Waco for 27 years.

During this time, he witnessed many violent crimes in our community.

“It must have been 1:30 a.m. when they shot through my neighbors window, hit the door frame and broke the window,” Terry said.

Let’s break down some new stuff crime statistics sent to 25 Messages Marc Monroy via Waco Police Department spokeswoman Cierra Shipley.

  • Overall crime is down 8% compared to September 2023
  • West Waco has the largest increase in assault cases, up 34%.
  • Total attacks decreased by 5%

The numbers show that as of last month, overall crime in Waco was down 8% from a year ago.

Violent crimes, including murders, robberies, sexual assaults and assaults, decreased by 3%.

“We have to look out for each other and each other,” Terry said.

But several neighborhoods are seeing an increase in attacks.

On Corridor 5 near US-84, seven additional assault cases were reported in September compared to last year.

The Landon ward area increased by five cases, while West Waco saw the largest increase with a spike of 16 cases.

“Thank you for coming and checking us out as I was unaware of the new rates. I’m here like everyone else to find out about the robberies,” Terry said.

Terry said 25 Messages Marc Monroy is grateful for the opportunities he has received over the past few years.

“I know he moved,” Terry said. “First it was in North Waco, at the youth center, and now it’s coming to West Waco, but Lord help us, we don’t have to deal with this anymore.”
