A man imprisoned in connection with the hotel riots died as a result of ‘hanging’, according to an investigation.

An inquest found that a 61-year-old grandfather who was found dead in prison after a riot outside a hotel where asylum seekers were staying died from hanging.

Peter Lynch died at HMP Moorland in South Yorkshire on October 19, Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard on Thursday.

Doncaster Senior Coroner Nicola Mundy opened and adjourned an inquest into Lynch’s death, during which she was told his preliminary cause of death was hanging.

The inquest revealed that “additional inquiries” were ongoing into the cause of his death, and Ms Mundy said there was no full pathologist’s report yet.

In August, Lynch was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court by a judge who heard him at the head of a crowd that gathered outside the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, Rotherham, on August 4, shouting “scum” and “baby killers” in the police.
