Former Olympique de Marseille midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada died at the age of 35, the club announced on Thursday, and the Moroccan federation (FRMF) described his death as a “great tragedy”.

No official cause of death has been announced for the French-born player, who made 26 caps for Morocco and was part of the team that reached the final of the 2011 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

“The club would like to express its sincere condolences to his family and share its sadness,” wrote Marseille, where Barrada spent two years.

Barrada also played for Spanish team Getafe and played in Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates before retiring in 2021. He also played for the Paris St Germain reserve team.

“Paris St Germain expresses its sincerest condolences to the family and friends,” PSG wrote in X.
