A parent is on trial accused of a stabbing at a primary school that injured the principal

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The man accused of stabbing an elementary school principal on Thursday appeared before a Cabell County judge Friday morning.

Joshua Collins, 43, of Huntington, is accused of stabbing South Point Elementary School Principal Bill Christian.

The brutal incident took place on Thursday, October 24.

Collins was booked into Western Regional Jail at 7:45 p.m. Thursday after being released from Huntington Hospital.

Collins is awaiting extradition to Lawrence County, Ohio, but must appear before a Cabell County District Judge for an extradition hearing.

WSAZ learned Friday morning that the trial could take two to three weeks.

According to new details released by law enforcement, Collins first stopped at the school office on Thursday, where he was greeted by Principal Christian in the hallway just outside the office door.

Deputies say Collins was upset about a child custody issue. Deputies say Collins pulled out a knife and stabbed Christian in the neck and upper torso.

According to deputies, the principal then ran into the office behind a closed door. However, deputies say Collins then broke the window in the door and entered the office.

Collins followed the principal through the office and then into the cafeteria, where he was confronted by a South Point police officer and arrested.

The school nurse began treating Principal Christian before he was taken to the hospital for treatment. At the last check-up, his condition was serious.

Deputies say Collins suffered cuts to his arms during the incident and was also taken to Huntington Hospital.

Deputies say that when Collins returns to Lawrence County, Ohio, he will be charged and additional charges will be filed in the case.

The school was closed for the duration of the incident. Nothing happened to any of the children.

Classes at South Point Elementary School were canceled on Friday due to the incident.

Christian’s condition is stable but serious and he is in hospital.
