A 94-year-old man who died in an accident near Wagner has been identified – Mitchell Republic

WAGNER, SD – A 94-year-old man killed in a two-vehicle collision Monday, Oct. 21, near Wagner has been identified.

On Friday, authorities announced that Robert Carl Roberts had died following an accident at Wagner Community Hospital.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Roberts was a passenger in a 2021 Subaru Outback when the driver stopped and began to make a U-turn. A 2023 Peterbilt 389 tractor/trailer was also traveling west on SD 46, west of Wagner, when the vehicles collided while making a U-turn.

The driver of the Outback, 87-year-old Margaret Ella Roberts of Wagner, was airlifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. A check is underway to see if the pair are wearing their seatbelts.

The driver of the Peterbilt, a 65-year-old man from Piedmont, S.D., was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt.

The crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. near mile marker 287, approximately one mile west of Wagner.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information disclosed so far is preliminary only.
