CALHOUN COUNTY, IA – Court documents provide more details about the events on the night of the man’s death and the violent history between the murder suspect – who is also his brother.

Kyle Andrew Coolack, 39, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his brother, Brad Henry Coolack, 35, who was found dead in March 2022. Brad Coolack was shot multiple times in an apartment at 7200 West Road Greens.

What happened

Records show Kyle initially called 911 to report that a man had been shot multiple times in the leg and identified himself as “Coolack.”

He reportedly told the operator that cardiopulmonary resuscitation was not being performed because the patient was dead, and then hung up the phone.

When officers arrived, they found Brad’s body on the floor of the apartment’s bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. A dog was also found, probably grazed by two bullets.

There was also a tourniquet on Brad’s left leg, and there were three fired 9mm shell casings on the bedroom floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives spoke with the victim’s ex-girlfriend, who then informed them about Brad’s brother, Kyle. She told detectives that Kyle often stayed at his brother’s apartment. She also said that there was an incident in 2021 where Kyle allegedly pistol-whipped his brother.

Investigators also spoke with Brad and Kyle’s mother, who told detectives that Kyle had a firearm and believed he was possibly responsible for his brother’s death.

Houston police said witnesses in the area heard two people arguing, followed by multiple gunshots.

During the argument, the witness told investigators he heard one of the men shout at the other man, “You slept with my wife!” and immediately several shots. When investigators spoke to Brad’s ex-wife, she admitted to having an affair with Kyle while Brad was overseas.

Kyle Coolack was initially identified as a person of interest in this incident and was charged with murder on July 15, 2022.

After two years on the run, Coolack was found in Calhoun County, Iowa.

Murder suspect caught after confessing to his brother’s murder

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call Saturday from a man who said he had just kicked another man out of his home. The man was recently at home. During the interview, authorities received information that a man identified as Coolack had admitted that he was on the run in connection with the killing of his brother, which led to Coolack being kicked out of the house.

A Calhoun County deputy located Coolack near the town of Pomeroy while walking south on the highway. He was detained and interrogated.

After initially giving deputies a false name, Coolack revealed his real name to deputies. While checking records, deputies were able to find an outstanding murder warrant for which Coolack was wanted.

Coolack was arrested and taken to the Carroll County Jail to await extradition back to Houston.
