A Hanover student wrote a racist slur on a school bus during a football game

RICHMOND, Va. — A racial slur was discovered on a Henrico County Public Schools bus window during a Hanover High School football game Thursday evening.

During the junior varsity game, Hanover High School administrators received a report that a racial slur was detected on a Henrico County Public Schools bus parked on the Hanover High School campus.

According to Hanover County Public Schools, the arc was likely written with a finger on the mud of the bus’s rear window.

Both schools completed their investigation into the incident today. Hanover Schools said a responsible student who attends Hanover High School “assumes full responsibility to the fullest extent permitted by the Student Code of Conduct and School Board Policy” and is not a football player for Hanover High School.

Hanover School Board policy prohibits the release of student records.

In a message to families, faculty and staff, Hanover County Public Schools said:

“On behalf of Hanover County Public Schools and the Hanover County School Board, we strongly condemn this behavior and any form of racism, bigotry or any other form of discrimination and hatred, and we take these matters with the utmost seriousness. As a school of division, we stand for unity, respect and inclusion. We remain committed to being a school where all students, faculty, staff and community members feel welcome, valued and safe from racism and other forms of hate within and beyond school communities, and we reaffirm our commitment to inclusion and respect.”

A statement from Henrico County Public Schools provided to CBS 6 reads:

“Henrico County Public Schools is aware of an act of vandalism involving racial slurs written on an HCPS bus that was discovered during Thursday evening’s Henrico High School junior varsity football game at Hanover High School. We are horrified by this incident and the hate speech directed at our students. Racism has absolutely no place in our schools and communities. Hanover County Public Schools principals have assured us they share our outrage and have taken immediate action to identify and discipline the student Henrico Schools is proud of a diverse and inclusive community where hate and racism are not tolerated, and we are working together to keep students safe and treated with respect on and off campus.”
