Rock County drug dealer jailed after man overdosed and died

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WIFR) – A 49-year-old man is receiving a sentence after being found guilty of drug dealing to a man who later overdosed and died.

David Steptoe, of Janesville, was found guilty of first-degree reckless homicide by delivery of narcotics and possession of fentanyl with intent to deliver. The charges stem from cases from 2021 and 2023.

On October 25, a judge sentenced Steptoe to 32 years in a Wisconsin state prison; 22 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision.

Prosecutors say Steptoe sold drugs to numerous people throughout Rock County, including fentanyl to a 41-year-old man, which led to his overdose and death.

Investigators say Steptoe also had cocaine and fentanyl in his possession at the time of his January 2023 arrest.
