EAST COVENTRY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) — Authorities in Chester County say a 90-year-old man shot and killed his 89-year-old wife in her nursing home room before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Manatawny Manor Nursing Home in East Coventry Township.

The man was taken to Reading Hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and died overnight, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.

Authorities said there was another patient in the room when the shots rang out, but there were no reports of any other physical injuries.

The weapon was secured at the scene.

Shawn Johnson, a nursing home employee, says he took the day off but went to the facility to check on the patients and staff.

“This is crazy. I was shocked when I heard about it,” Johnson said.

Pat Erb says her father lives at the facility and was in his room when the shooting occurred.

“He said he just heard some commotion and they closed the door to his room,” Erb said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Chester County detectives at 610-344-6866.
