What do we know about the Cleat Hill explosion in Bedford?

Many homes have been evacuated since Saturday morning. Bedford Borough Council said it had found accommodation for around 25 families, with others believed to be staying with family or friends.

The cordon remained in place “for the safety of the public and to enable operations to be carried out,” he said.

Homes on Glenrose Avenue and Wagstaff Close outside the cordon were also evacuated as they are accessible within the cordon.

“The effectiveness of this cordon is constantly checked,” he added.

From Thursday, residents could collect some essential items, but only in a “controlled and supervised manner.”

Ian Simpson, who lives within the cordon, said he had not been home since the afternoon of Saturday, October 19, and was currently living with his in-laws and only had a small number of items with him that they took when he left.

He said he didn’t expect this event to happen, he felt uncomfortable and felt like he was living in a TV drama.

“The thought that your neighbor could drill up to 120 m (394 ft) deep for a ground source heat pump is truly terrifying.”

He said he wants to make sure better regulations and controls are needed.

The council said it had provided support, including financial assistance, to affected residents, established an advice and support center and a dedicated 24-hour emergency hotline.

She added that she continues to monitor the situation and “manages all risks.”

It is not known how long the cordon may remain in place, but it could take several weeks.
