Teacher arrested for sexually assaulting a tribal student at a Gujarat boarding school

Dahod: A police official on Saturday said a teacher was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a Class IX tribal student at a boarding school in Gujarat’s Dahod district.

The incident took place at a tribal boarding school in Khalta village and the accused was identified as Kalpesh Baria, a Dhanpur police official said.

“On Thursday evening, Baria called a 17-year-old student to his quarters in the Khalta ashram campus on the pretext of cooking for him and made sexual propositions. He also grabbed her from behind. She managed to leave the place only after she called her sister there,” the official said.

“When her siblings, who study at the same school, learned about her plight, they informed her father. The family filed a complaint against Baria on Friday and he was arrested soon after, he said.

Baria was charged under Art. 75 section 1 letter i) Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit propositions of a sexual nature), Art. 8 (sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The ashramshala is managed by the state social welfare department.
