Grim update on man who set himself on fire on boat near Pittwater Quays Marina – police launch investigation

A man who allegedly spilled the contents of a jerry can on himself has died in hospital after suffering severe burns on a boat, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Emergency services were called to the boat following reports of welfare problems at Pittwater, near Scotland Island, in Sydney’s north, on October 9 at around 2.55pm.

Upon arrival, Sydney Water Police spoke to a 61-year-old man about the alleged activation of the EPIRB rescue device.

During this conversation, the man allegedly picked up the canister and poured the contents of the can onto himself while smoking a cigarette, which caused a fire.

The officers managed to extinguish the fire and immediately provide the man with first aid.

The man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical but stable condition for further treatment.

New South Wales Police confirmed the man died in hospital from his injuries after setting himself on fire at around 4am on Saturday.
