Catterall will face former two-time world champion Regis Prograis in a super lightweight clash at Co-Op Live, which sees prestigious boxing return to the UK after several high-profile bouts in the Middle East.

Catterall, a 31-year-old from Chorley, was controversially beaten by Josh Taylor in 2022 in his fight for the undisputed super lightweight crown, losing on points in Glasgow despite most feeling he had done enough to earn the decision.

Prograis is one of the toughest tests outside the world champions and victory today would be another major statement for Catterall.

Prograis last fought 10 months ago, losing the WBC 140-pound title to Devin Haney, and the American also has a loss to Taylor, who was defeated by the Scot in a close fight five years ago.

Catterall has made it clear he wants to fight for the world title in early 2025, naming Australian IBF champion Liam Paro, also promoted by Matchroom, as a potential opponent. However, these plans will quickly be thwarted if Prograis leaves Manchester victorious.

Catterall should have had an undefeated record, with Taylor’s controversial defeat being the only defeat of his career.

Since then, he has made a flawless return to the division’s elite, defeating Jorge Linares via unanimous decision and then proving he is too good in a rematch with Taylor.

Eight of Catterall’s last nine fights have gone the distance and it would be a surprise if it was an early evening in Manchester this weekend.

He doesn’t necessarily have the one-punch power to stop the action early, but Catterall regularly proves he can control a fight.

Prograis does have that power, as 24 of his 29 wins have come by distance, but that’s the type of opponent he’s faced.

In Prograis’ last fight, Haney, as the better boxer, was able to calmly stay out of trouble, and Prograis was unconvincing against fighters who moved well and didn’t allow him to relax his hands.

If the American is to upset the odds, he will need to push the issue early and take Catterall out of his comfort zone, but we are betting on the home man to dominate the fight and easily score wide points.
