The Butler County school district went on lockdown Friday morning after a threat.

Madison local schools were placed on lockdown immediately after authorities received the threat, according to a Facebook post on the district’s account. The post said all students were safe.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office reported that just after 7:30 a.m., a school employee received a voicemail from an unknown person threatening to “shoot up the school.”

The sheriff’s office said the seventh-grade student was detained for questioning. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told Enquirer media partner Nov19 that the student had “nothing to do” with the threat and was a “victim” of the swatting call.

Authorities said there would be no classes at Madison Elementary School on Friday and buses were diverted to take students home, although parents who dropped off their children must pick them up from school.

Classes in middle and high schools are scheduled to end at 10:00. All three buildings are located on one campus on State Route 122.

Madison Local Schools serves students from kindergarten through grade 12 in rural Madison Township, west of Middletown.
