Sheriff’s deputy seriously injured in crash while responding to incident

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) – A Williamson County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured in an accident Friday evening while en route to an incident in Pittsburg, Illinois.

Williamson Co. Sheriff’s Office said it was called Nov. 22 in Pittsburgh after reports of “a loud gunshot and a woman screaming.”

One of the responding deputies was driving northbound on Pittsburg Road, south of Khoury League Rd., when he struck a deer in the road. It happened around 6:30 p.m

The patrol vehicle he was driving was severely damaged, causing it to go off the road, slide down a steep embankment and come to rest several feet deep at the bottom of a ravine.

The deputy had to be extricated from the vehicle after suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. He was then transported to a local trauma center, but may be transferred to St. Louis for further treatment.

The sheriff’s office also said the patrol vehicle was traveling at normal highway speeds and the deputy was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Illinois State Police, United Ambulance and the Williamson Co. Fire Department responded to the scene. Fire Department.

There is no word yet on the outcome of the first incident in Pittsburgh.
