Omaha police identify the man who was shot and the officer who shot him

Omaha police have identified a 25-year-old man who was injured after being shot by police Wednesday and the officer who shot him.

Police responded to a home near 44th and Center Street shortly before midnight Wednesday after a woman called 911 and reported that her husband, identified as Nickalous Vallejos, was making statements, according to a press release from the Omaha Police Department with suicidal intentions and was armed with a gun. .

According to the release, when police arrived at the residence, they found Vallejos on the porch holding a gun to his head.

Police said the officer tried to negotiate with Vallejos for more than four minutes and repeatedly told him to drop his weapon, but he was uncooperative.

According to police, footage from the cruiser’s police body camera shows Vallejos moving the gun back and forth, from pointing it at himself to holding it close to his body. Police released photos from body camera footage and a photo of the gun Vallejos was said to be holding.

Vallejos then put the gun aside and began to raise it with his left hand, at which point Officer Tyler Boyer fired one round from his gun, striking Vallejos, according to police.

During a voluntary interview with police, Boyer said Vallejos pointed a gun at another officer and that’s why Boyer shot him. According to police, Boyer and other officers immediately took measures to save Vallejos’ life after he was shot.

Omaha Fire Department medics then took Vallejos to Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition.

The responding officers and the woman who called 911 were not injured.

Douglas County Jail records show Vallejos was arrested for possession with intent to deliver cocaine. Police reportedly found drugs in Vallejos’ home during their investigation.

Boyer, who has been with the Omaha Police Department for five years, remains on paid leave while the investigation is ongoing.
