One dead, 3 others injured in car flames after crash outside Miami high school – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – One person is dead and three others were taken to the hospital, one of them in critical condition, after a two-vehicle crash that set the cars on fire outside a Miami high school.

Miami Fire and Police responded to the scene Monday afternoon, just outside iTech, Miami’s Mega Technology Magnet High School, located at 6101 NW 2nd Avenue.

A school board official was allegedly the first to notify authorities after witnessing the crash.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene where crews surrounded several vehicles that had burned following the crash.

Mobile phone footage revealed the moments when one of the vehicles burst into flames. Flames were seen coming from the car.

Witnesses told 7News one of the vehicles was heading north when the driver looked at his phone. The witness said he heard the accident occur moments later with flames exploding from the vehicles involved.

“All I hear is boom, boom, boom,” said Layma Faith Denavar, who witnessed the accident. “And we immediately got out of the car because my mom said, ‘Oh my God, there’s a car accident.’ We got out of the car, ran across the street in that direction and saw flames and people at the door. We saw them pushing kids back into school.”

“I heard a crash so I started running here,” one witness said.

“All I hear is people screaming, flames bursting and explosions,” said Lance Elijah, another witness. “And then we all had to go inside.”

According to rescue teams, at least one person fell out of one of the vehicles and suffered burns.

7News cameras captured the moment a person was transported in critical condition to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

According to Miami police, four victims were involved in the incident, one of whom tragically died.

None of the victims of the crash had any connection with the school.

“It appears that one of the vehicles that you can see behind us actually lost control, went off the sidewalk and struck several stationary objects and two vehicles,” Miami Police Capt. Freddy Cruz said. “Now when they hit the vehicles, something happened as the vehicle burst into flames. Two people managed to exit one of the vehicles.”

Roads remain closed between Northwest 60th Street and 61st Street and Second Avenue.

The vehicle did not make contact with the school.

An investigation into the causes of the crash is ongoing.
