Man identified in fatal crash at Resource Recycling

Oct. 28 – LIMA – A federal agency continues to investigate an incident that resulted in the death of a Resource Recycling, Inc. employee on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration began an inspection following the death of worker Miguel A. Martinez Serna, 50, at the plant at 1596 Neubrecht Road in Lima.

When the conveyor was turned on, Martinez was working on the conveyor approximately 45 feet above the ground. Martinez fell off the conveyor and fell to the ground, sustaining fatal injuries, said Scott Allen, regional director of public affairs and media relations for the U.S. Department of Labor.

OSHA has six months to complete inspections, issue citations and propose fines if violations are found during the inspection.

Martinez, of Waynesfield, was born in Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, before coming to Lima to work decades ago, according to his obituary. He is survived by his mother, Rebecca, and two children, Brisa Martinez of Spencerville and Miguel Angel Martinez Jr. from Mount Vernon. According to his obituary, he enjoyed watching football, playing golf, fishing and cooking. The obituary states that he traveled to Hidalgo, where his mother still lived, at least once a year, and usually called her every day.

By Monday morning, Resource Recycling, Inc. did not respond to a request for comment on the situation.

In July, a litter fire broke out at the company and burned for several days. No injuries were reported in this incident.
