The fourth season Only murders in the building solved the mystery of Sazz’s murder and revealed whose death is the main topic of season 5.

The Hulu series premiered in August 2021 and follows Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliwier (Marcin Krótki) and Charles (Steve Martin) How solve mysterious deaths which take place in their apartment building in New York. Season 1 dealt with the death of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), the second season saw the unveiling of Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) murderer, and in season 3 the main mystery was the death of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd).

Season 4 began with Charles, Oliver and Mabel initially unaware that Charles’ body double, Sazz (Jane Lynch), was shot in his apartment. Although the trio eventually realized what had happened, they spent most of the season trying to determine whether Sazz was the target… or whether the bullet was intended for Charles.

In the penultimate episode, it is revealed that Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha) wasn’t just the person writing the script for the film based on the lives of Charles, Oliver and Mabel. Marshall was Sazz’s prodigy until a stunt gone wrong forced Sazz to replace Marshall with Glen Stubbins (Rudd). As an act of revenge, Marshall killed Glen after shooting Sazz — and credit for the script.

On Tuesday, October 29, during the season finale, Marshall confirmed that he acted alone and killed Sazz because she was going to tell Charles that she wrote the script. Marshall held Mabel – and therefore Oliver and Charles – hostage once they found out, but Jan (AmyRyan) saved the day by shooting him from Charles’ apartment.

The trio thought they were lucky when Oliver’s wedding went off without a hitch. But the next morning they found Lester (Teddy Coluca) bleeding to death in the fountain in Arconia.

Only murders in the building threw Charles into an emotional crisis over Sazz’s death. He tried to mourn her by solving a murder he believed might be related to him. Along the way, Charles learned more about Sazz’s life and gained a new appreciation for her friendship.

Charles was keen to track down who was responsible, and that led him to Marshall. He even scaled the side of a building to get to Mabel when Marshall took her hostage and came face to face with Sazz’s murderer again. After Marshall’s death, Charles made sure Sazz received the recognition she deserved for her script, and planned to scatter her ashes on the site she had purchased for her future trampoline park.

Oliver’s main goal in season 4 was to get back on track with his girlfriend Loretta (Meryl Streep), after she moved to Hollywood. Fake Instagram and flirtation with Charles’ sister Doreen (Melissa McCarthy), later resulted in the engagement of Oliver and Loretta. Oliver was excited to remarry at the end of the season.

It seemed like the wedding might not happen when Mabel was taken hostage and Loretta was told she would have to move to New Zealand for work, but somehow it all came together and Oliver ended the season as a married man.

Mabel Mora

Season 4 found Mabel at a crossroads without an apartment or a stable job. She planned to use the money from the film to invest in her professional future, while squatting in her apartment to provide herself with a place to live.

Mabel was also focused on finding out who was responsible for Sazz’s death. After determining it was Marshall, Mabel seemed inspired by Sazz’s journey. Bev suggested (Molly Shannon) that Sazz’s life might inspire her next project, but it was unclear whether Mabel would pursue it. Her plans were even more thwarted when a woman (Leoni tea) entered the building, asking the three of them for help in finding her missing husband. They said no and the next morning Lester was dead.

Season 4 allowed viewers to learn more about Sazz’s journey to becoming a stunt double and her friendship with Charles. Before her death, Sazz wrote a screenplay about the Arkonia murders and planned to retire to open a trampoline park. While writing the story of Charles, Mabel and Oliver, Sazz began to realize that there were questions that had not been answered in the first season, when she began writing the script about Arconia. Sazz shared her work with Marshall, but he took away the credit. When Sazz was about to tell Charles about this, Marshall shot her, but he didn’t realize that she had left a copy of the script for Charles to find so he could put everything together. Charles also made sure that Sazz was recognized for her screenplay for the film.

A flashback episode earlier in the season introduced Marshall as a writer struggling with imposter syndrome. He sometimes helped the main trio when the investigation went wrong, but it turned out that he was Sazz’s mysterious prodigy.

Stunt on Ron Howard movie caused Sazz to replace Marshall. He didn’t take the news well, but he didn’t start planning revenge. He was really excited to get back to writing until he read Sazz’s script and realized she was much better than he ever could be. Marshall stole her script and sold it as his own. When Bev got him a movie deal, Marshall confessed to Sazz, but she wouldn’t let him take the credit. This caused him to kill Sazz to keep the secret and later Glen because he recognized him. Marshall was also about to kill all three of them, but Jan got to him before he could.

The first suspect in Sazz’s murder was a group of people living on the other side of Arkonia. Slowly everyone was excluded as Charles, Mabel and Oliver realized that the group was hiding another secret from them. Westies were collected by Professor Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne), who offered them cheap apartments on the same floor. They eventually became entangled in Dudenoff’s plans to end his life and continued to cash his Social Security checks to hide the truth about what happened to him.

In the finale, Vince and Rudy helped the main trio defeat Marshall by distracting him.
