Judge Cannon refuses to recuse himself from Trump assassination attempt case

Judge Aileen Cannon on Tuesday rejected calls to recuse herself from the case involving former President Donald Trump’s second assassination attempt, saying praise from the former president was not enough to justify recusal.

Lawyers for Ryan Routh, the only suspect in the second attack, she asked Cannon to back off earlier this month, arguing that Cannon’s reputation against Trump could create an appearance of bias.

Cannon was the case was randomly assigned last month, but she was appointed by Trump during his presidency, who praised her for handling his classified documents case, which she dismissed.

On Tuesday, the judge issued the order seven-page ruling at her request, saying she has no relationship with Trump and that speculation that he might promote her to a higher court if he is elected to a second term next week is not enough to cause her to transfer the case to another judge.

“I have never spoken to or met with former President Trump except in connection with his required attendance at an official court proceeding through counsel,” Cannon wrote. “I have no connection with the alleged victim in any reasonable sense of that phrase.”

She also rejected speculation that she might be named attorney general in Trump’s second term or elevated to the Supreme Court, and dismissed the reports as “media rumors.” according to “Polityka”.

Cannon further denied reports that she had a personal relationship with one of the nine prosecutors on the case, with whom she went to high school and attended his wedding while the couple worked at the Justice Department.

“I have no personal contact with the prosecutor and have not communicated with him for years,” she wrote.

Routh is currently a rehearsal was scheduled in the case of November 18.
