In the last stage of the campaign, Rogers is trying to link Slotkin with China

Candidate for the Michigan Senate Mike Rogers campaign team is issuing a final warning to the constituents of Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) over her alleged ties to China — an accusation that both candidates have made at each other throughout the election cycle.

Slotkin and Mike Rogers, former Republican Both House members are vying for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, currently held by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI). The Cook Political Report labels the seat as “thrown away”; questionnaire shows Slotkin leading Rogers 46.2% to 42.5%.

Now, a week before Election Day, Rogers’ campaign has launched a new campaign websitetrying to convince voters that Slotkin’s record in Congress has harmed the livelihoods of Michiganders.

The website states that “Michigan voters cannot trust Slotkin to stand up to China” because Slotkin allegedly signed a non-disclosure agreement to coordinate with Gotion, a Chinese electric vehicle battery company.

The Slotkin campaign has denied that it signed an NDA related to the Gotion plant development.

“This is a completely false attack by national Republicans,” Antoine Gives, a spokesman for Slotkin’s campaign, said in a statement. “As a national security expert, Republican Slotkin has dedicated her career to protecting the United States from foreign threats, and in Congress she has led efforts to combat Chinese influence in key supply chains and the auto industry. Rep. Slotkin never signed any agreement regarding the Gotion project or the Chinese government.”

Many news outlets including Detroit news AND Detroit Free Pressreported that there was no evidence that Slotkin signed an NDA for the Gotion project.

Slotkin did it sign NDA agreement, along with dozens of lawmakers from both political stripes, with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation while the state was negotiating a Gotion battery plant. However, the NDA Slotkin signed was for two different economic development projects in her district.

Rogers’ campaign, which launched last December, featured ads announcing that Slotkin had signed an NDA to develop the Gotion plant.

The proposed plant is extremely unpopular with Michigan residents; Green Charter Township, the municipality where the Gotion battery factory was to be built, has been fighting for months to block its construction.

Many people fear that electric vehicles could make the United States dependent on China, which dominates the extraction of minerals needed to build electric vehicle batteries.

Although Michigan’s auto industry has declined in recent decades, it contributed $304 billion to the state’s economy and accounted for 21% of all U.S. auto production in 2022.

Some car manufacturers, such as General Motors, are betting on electric vehicles; Michigan voters remain divided as national and industry leaders seek to compete with China in their development.
