Two people have been taken to hospital following an ongoing investigation into a multi-vehicle crash on the East Derwent Highway in Old Beach

Update at 10:20 p.m., Thursday, October 29: Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries this evening after a serious crash which closed the East Derwent Highway.

The road through Old Beach was closed for several hours on Tuesday after a three-vehicle collision.

Police were called to a collision between a white Toyota Hilux with a box trailer, a gray Mazda CX-3 and a white Nissan Navara near Jetty Road at around 5.20pm.

Initial investigations indicate that the Nissan, which was traveling westbound, drove onto the wrong side of the road and collided with an eastbound Toyota and Mazda.

The 43-year-old male driver of the Navara and the 52-year-old female driver of the Mazda suffered serious injuries and were taken to Royal Hobart Hospital.

The 20-year-old driver and 24-year-old passenger of the Hilux escaped unscathed.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages, but it appears “inattentiveness” may have been a factor.

Before: The East Derwent Motorway at Old Beach has been closed in both directions following a multi-vehicle collision.

Police say Jetty Road and Baskerville Road are being used as diversions due to the highway closure.

Northbound traffic will be diverted onto Jetty Road, while southbound traffic will be diverted onto Baskerville Road.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Details about injuries and the number of vehicles involved in the crash are not yet known.
