Jamie Dobie looks at the ‘massive campaign’ to strengthen Scotland’s position

Jamie Dobie says the Autumn Nations Series is a “huge campaign” on a personal level as he looks to cement his place in the Scotland team.

The Glasgow Warrior was selected as one of four central midfielders in the squad alongside George Horne, Ben White and Al Price, but has played most of his recent rugby matches for club and country on the wing.

Price’s departure from the Warriors to Edinburgh last season opened the door for 23-year-old Dobie to gain more playing time. He appeared in all four Tests in Scotland summer tours of the Americas.

“I think it’s a huge campaign and season,” Dobie said.

“I got my first gig in this series three years ago and had to wait almost two years to get my second one.

“I missed out on being named to the World Cup squad, but I think coming back for the summer tour was a great opportunity for me. Ultimately, I took part in all four matches, which was a great experience for me personally.

“The start of the season in Glasgow has been relatively positive, so I’m happy with where my rugby is and where it’s heading.

I’m hoping this will be a big few weeks to really cement our place in the squad and get into as many games as possible.

Dobie sees himself primarily as a scrum-half but says he is happy to play his role on the wing if it improves his chances of featuring in the coming weeks against Fiji, South Africa, Portugal and Australia.

“I’m definitely happy playing both positions now and of course the most important thing is commitment,” he said.

“So whether you play second half or on the wing, that would be the main benefit.

“I still see myself as playing mainly in the scrum, which gives me the added benefit of being able to cover the wing.

“Of course, during the summer tour, I started on the wing twice. So I only see it as an advantage for me to be able to occupy these positions and obviously over the last few years with Franco (Smith) running the 6-2 (bench) and especially because of that I have spent a lot of time on the wing.

So I feel more than comfortable to do it and I’m glad the coaches have faith in me to be able to play.”
