Person injured in shooting in University of Bridgeport dining hall

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A gunman opened fire in a University of Bridgeport dining hall, injuring one person and causing the campus to close while police searched for the suspect.

Police in Connecticut’s largest city said the victim was in the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, and the shooter remained at large on Wednesday. The lockdown was lifted shortly before 6 a.m. on Wednesday as police described it as an “isolated incident” with no further threat to the public.

Authorities said the shooting occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and officers arrived minutes later to the scene where chaos reigned. Police reported that two young men who were not students at the university were involved in the shooting. Authorities said the men knew each other and the shooting likely resulted from an argument.

Police Chief Roderick Porter said the victim was conscious and talking to police Tuesday evening. He said there were several people in the dining room at the time and he did not immediately know how many shots were fired.

“We want to assure students, parents, faculty and residents of Bridgeport that the area is safe,” Porter said in a statement. “To further enhance neighborhood security, a police presence will be maintained on the University of Bridgeport campus until the suspect is brought to justice.”

The private university’s president, Danielle Wilken, said the dining hall was open to the public Tuesday evening due to sporting events on campus.

The nonprofit school enrolls approximately 4,100 undergraduate and graduate students.
