A Kentucky community is marking two years since a law enforcement officer was killed in an accident

LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) – Two years ago, a law enforcement officer from southern Kentucky died in an accident that, according to investigators, was caused by a drunk driver.

Sgt. Logan Medlock is remembered in Laurel County.

A memorial march was planned in the evening to celebrate the second anniversary.

A fishing tournament named after him is also organized every year.

“The most important thing we want to take away from this is that we want to honor Logan’s memory and keep it alive,” said Officer Hobie Daugherty.

Sergeant Medlock died near where he started his shift while telling others he wanted to stop another drunk driver. However, the police reported that a drunk driver hit his police car.

“It’s not something that will go away. Whenever. Something you can live with and be constantly reminded of,” Daugherty said.

Casey Byrd is still in the Laurel County Detention Center, but authorities say he will soon be transferred to a state Department of Corrections prison.

Was sentenced in August to 20 years for murder, DUI and other charges.

The disaster changed the lives of many people, both Medlock and Bryd, and their families. But Medlock’s law enforcement family is trying to keep his name and memory alive. The fishing tournament is an annual success story.

“Usually 100 boats show up for fishing tournaments and that really deserves praise for the way it was run. What a good cause,” Daugherty said.

The tournament raises money through the Fallen Police Officer Foundation, which helps families and others consistently impacted by losses like this.
