Person charged for allegedly attempting to vote as a non-citizen in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WILX) – A foreign national is facing criminal charges after officials say he illegally tried to vote in Ann Arbor.

According to Attorney General Dana Nessel and Washtenaw County Attorney Eli Savit, on Sunday, October 27, a non-U.S. citizen attempted to cast a ballot in Ann Arbor.

As a result, this individual was charged in Washtenaw County with multiple election-related crimes.

The individual will face charges of an ineligible voter attempting to cast a ballot and perjury and making a false statement to secure voter registration.

“Non-citizen voting is an extremely isolated and rare event. Investigations in multiple states and across the country found no evidence that large numbers of foreigners were registering to vote. It is even rarer for a non-citizen to actually vote. When this happens, we take it extremely seriously. Our elections are secure and Michigan state and local election officials carefully follow the law,” Nessel and Savit said in a joint statement.

“Let’s be clear: voting records are public – any foreigner who attempts to vote fraudulently in Michigan will be at great risk and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The accused person has not yet been identified.
