Double shooting in Birmingham: 1 man dead, another injured; 1 in custody

Police said one person was killed and another injured in a double shooting in southwest Birmingham on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday just after 6 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to a report of a person shot at 1700 Pearson Avenue SW, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

Officers arriving at the scene found an adult male suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, Fitzgerald said. Police then found a second man lying on the sidewalk with life-threatening injuries.

Community members were already helping one of the victims when “our officers stepped in and took over lifesaving responsibilities,” Fitzgerald said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived on scene and took both victims to UAB Hospital, where the man with life-threatening injuries succumbed to his wounds.

According to Fitzgerald, the initial investigation revealed that all those involved in the shooting knew each other.

“We believe this all stemmed from an argument between the deceased victim and a third adult male,” he said. “He wasn’t shot in this case. … We believe that all parties involved knew each other, so this is an incident in which the suspect and the victim or victims knew each other.”

An individual police officer named as a person of interest in this case was detained at the scene and is due to be questioned at police headquarters in Birmingham city center.

Fitzgerald said detectives were still determining the person’s involvement in the incident as of Wednesday evening.

“We need the public’s comments at this time, if you have any additional information please do so call CrimeStoppers so that you can get paid for your tips,” the officer said, adding that tipsters can remain anonymous.
