Celtics star Jayson Tatum involved in efforts to create WNBA expansion team St. Louis

Now that he is an NBA champion, Jayson Tatum wants to bring basketball to his hometown.

According to Thursday morning’s report from SporticoThe Boston Celtics star has “informally” agreed to support a billionaire-backed ownership bid to bring a WNBA expansion team to St. Louis. The group is co-led by Richard Chaifetz and David Hoffman; Chaifetz has already bid for NBA, MLB and NFL teams, while Hoffman owns minor league team St. Louis Blues.

“Tatum has informally agreed to invest in the team if it goes through and contribute behind the scenes to promote the group, both to other potential high-profile investors and the league itself, according to sources close to the offer,” Jacob Feldman wrote for Sportico.

Competing for the 16th WNBA expansion teamto be added by 2028 is tight. Patrick Mahomes has recently been associated with efforts to obtain an expansion in Kansas City. There have never been more eyes on the W and it’s no wonder there is widespread interest in landing the team.

Tatum had just won his first NBA title with the Celtics and brought the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to St. Louis to throw out the first pitch at a Cardinals game. He loves this city and having just signed the largest deal in NBA history worth $315 million, he certainly has the capital to get involved in sports ownership. As Sportico noted, the latest CBA allows him to own up to 4% of the WNBA franchise.

This is certainly a group to watch as deals increase.
