Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu played Game 5 of the WNBA Finals with a shooting hand injury

There was much talk about New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu’s shooting problems in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, even though the Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx to win the championship.

That’s because Ionescu was just 1-19 from the floor, and that was a bullseye historic due to its inefficiency. However, it has since been revealed that Sabrina sat through the match with an injured shooting hand.

In recent days, Ionescu was seen with something like an orthodontic brace on his hand, so it could be assumed that he was struggling with some kind of ailment. Especially after seeing how clearly she was in pain in that area during part of the final series. But a report by ESPN’s Alexa Philippou did now he gave details.

According to Philippou’s source, the exact nature of Ionescu’s injury is a massive tear in his thumb at the UCL level. The UCL is a ligament near where the thumb meets the hand, and Sabrina reportedly suffered the injury in the fourth game. This means that she played the entire decisive match due to this condition.

The injury shouldn’t limit Ionescu in the future, as ESPN stated that he will be re-evaluated in four weeks and is expected to make a full recovery.

Ionescu, of course he made one of the greatest shots in sports history lead Liberty to victory in Game 3 before she injured her thumb. Despite the injury and its possible impact on her shooting performance, Sabrina and company continued to lift the equipment throughout the remainder of the series.
