Cuomo under fire for allegedly lying about Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo faces federal charges after a US House of Representatives committee investigating the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic accused him of lying to Congress.

The Republican-led committee asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Cuomo, alleging that the Democrat lied Congress about its involvement in a controversial July 2020 state report on Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes.

Documents originally obtained by New York Times demonstrate that he allegedly worked on the drafts of this report.

“Mr. Cuomo made false statements to the select subcommittee in what appears to be a conscious, calculated effort to insulate himself from liability,” Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) wrote in the criminal complaint.

A spokesman for Cuomo denied the allegations and said the commission’s criminal referral was a “taxpayer-funded farce.”

Cuomo’s legal team filed a separate complaint with the Justice Department, accusing the commission of abuse of power.
