Student arrested after school metal detector alerted officers to the presence of a weapon

A Vero Beach High School student was arrested Thursday morning after trying to walk through a metal detector with a gun in his backpack, authorities said.

In a news release, Cristen Maddux, public information officer for the Indian River County School District, said the OPENGATE metal detector at the school entrance, located at 1700 16th Street in Vero Beach, activated and alerted the school. Resource Deputy.

When officers searched the student’s bag, they found a gun inside. It is unclear what type of weapon it was.

“A student in possession of a weapon was arrested and will not return to Vero Beach High School,” Maddux said in a news release.

Maddux added that “our school district has a zero-tolerance policy towards weapons of any kind, real or toy, on our campuses. Anyone violating this policy will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted accordingly.”

The Indian River County School District uses OPENGATE metal detectors on its two high school campuses.
