One of three laborers died after they visited Abapur forest in Gadchiroli and tried to take a selfie with a wild elephant

A laborer identified as Srikant Satre was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra on Thursday morning when he and two other friends were trying to take a photo with the tusker. NDTV.

Srikant Ramchandra Satre came from Navegaon with two friends to Gadchiroli for laying cables. Between work, the three decided to see elephants in the Abapur forest in the Mutnur forest area, where sightings had been reported earlier.

Satre, 23, decided to take a selfie with a wild elephant from a distance when it attacked and crushed him. His friends managed to escape and save their lives.

There was no word on whether the state government would pay any compensation for his death.

On Tuesday, information was received that a wild elephant had emerged from Chittagong and Gadchiroli forest areas. NDTV.

News agency PTI reported that a man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Odisha’s Sundergarh district. Also in September, there were four separate incidents of elephants trampling humans in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

Conflicts between humans and animals are a cause for concern for many, including: several cases of elephant attacks on people in forest areas.

Elephant attacks also resulted in deaths in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu in September and in Chattisgarh in August this year. According to government data, as of 2020, five deaths a year have been reported in the state of Karnataka due to elephant attack incidents.

In 2023, the central environment ministry published “Guidelines for Mitigating Human-Elephant Conflicts Using a Harmonious Coexistence Approach” to help regulate human-animal conflicts.
