Two people killed in crash on Interstate 83 near border: Maryland State Police

Two drivers died Wednesday afternoon, there was a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 83, just below the state line– says Maryland State Police.

The pickup driver, Kevin Johnson, 53, of Ruther Glen, Virginia, and the Peterbilt crane operator, James Hutson, 61, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, died at the scene, according to a press release. .

The four injured people were taken by ambulance to WellSpan York Hospital for treatment, according to the release.

The accident occurred on Wednesday just after 2 p.m. in the York Road area. It closed the northern part of the highway for several hours.

State police say a pickup truck with a trailer was traveling south on I-83 when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck entered the northbound lane and struck a mobile crane.

According to the release, both vehicles burst into flames.

Three other vehicles were destroyed in the fire, state police said.

I-83 was closed while state police investigated the crash.

According to the release, the cause is still under investigation.
