Navy foils Rohingya human trafficking plot in North Sumatra Archipelago

The navy says it foiled an attempt to smuggle 146 Rohingya refugees to Aceh after they disembarked from a large ship on the beach in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, on Thursday.

Rohingya refugees were detained as they boarded a truck that officials said was waiting for them on Dewi Indah Beach.

The head of the Medan immigration detention center, Sarsaralos Sivakkar, said the presence of the truck indicated that the arrival of Rohingya refugees was expected.

“We are currently investigating Rohingya human trafficking and pursuing the syndicate involved,” Sarsaralos said. Jakarta Post Office on Thursday.

He said the truck driver and two assistants were detained by the navy on suspicion of involvement in the operation. All three were detained along with the Rohingya refugees who were boarding the truck.

Police are looking for a man named Syaiful from Aceh, who they believe was involved in the arrival of refugees at Dewi Indah Beach.

“Syaiful was the contact person (for the arrival),” said Police Chief Deli Serdang, Senior Comm. Raphael Sandha Cahya Priambodo.
