Charges in Lyndale fatal crash: Open alcohol bottle found in suspect vehicle

What we know

Law enforcement responded to a fatal crash just off the Interstate 94 East exit near Lyndale Avenue around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the complaint, Minnesota State Patrol troopers determined that the Chevy Avalanche caused a chain-reaction collision when it struck the side of another SUV while approaching Dunwoody Boulevard and then “subsequently struck the Jeep Cherokee directly into the rear of the vehicle.”

The driver of the Avalanche, identified as Talon Covie-Cardell Walker, 29, of St. Paul, is charged with one count of vehicular homicide.

The woman driving the Jeep, identified as Natalie Gubbay, 26, of Minneapolis, died at the scene.

Troopers reportedly found an “open, partially full bottle of alcohol on the driver’s side floorboard” of the avalanche.

Details of the failure

The complaint states that witnesses told law enforcement that Walker was traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

The avalanche reportedly pushed the Jeep into the back of a Ford Edge, which was then pushed into the back of a Nissan Versa, which then pushed into a Toyota RAV4, which then hit an Audi Q5.

The complaint states that “the force of the collision caused the two cars to tilt sideways 180 degrees.”

Previous crimes

The criminal complaint notes that Walker has a prior implied license revocation effective June 17, 2021.

Court records show he was arrested in 2021 for driving under the influence, although the case was settled as a misdemeanor and careless driving.

Walker’s other offenses include disorderly conduct and violating a domestic violence no-contact order.

His first court appearance is scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, October 25.

Other victims

According to reports, a 20-year-old woman from St. Paul, who was a passenger in the avalanche, suffered life-threatening injuries.

A 2-year-old boy who was a passenger in the GMC Yukon involved in the crash was also injured, but is expected to survive.

A total of 10 people were injured, including Walker, and nine people were taken to hospital. A total of seven vehicles were involved in the collision.
