A 67-year-old man died Wednesday evening when he lost control of his car on an icy stretch of Richardson Highway near Glennallen, Alaska State Troopers said.

Warren McDaniel of Copper Center was driving south in a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria near Mile 105 just before 8:15 p.m. when he lost control while trying to pass another vehicle, troopers he said.

They said McDaniel’s car went into a ditch and hit trees. He died on the spot. There was no one else in his car.

McDaniel’s next of kin were notified of his death, and troopers said his body had been sent to the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Anchorage.

Some sections of the Richardson Highway were still icy on Friday. Department of Transport described Motorway conditions near Glennallen are fair with frost, patches of ice and snow on the road. Visibility in the area was reduced due to snow dust re-hanging.
