Arrest warrant issued for 80-year-old man injured in carjacking at Silver Cross Hospital, New Lenox police say

NEW LENOX, Ill. (WLS) — New Lenox police say a warrant has been issued for a suspect after an 80-year-old man was hit by his car during a carjacking outside Silver Cross Hospital on Thursday evening.

Police said the incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. when the victim was being helped into the passenger seat of his minivan.

Police said the suspect, identified by police as 35-year-old Kyle Sears, entered the driver’s side and began driving away.

The victim was partially seated when police said Sears drove away, and Sears then pushed the victim out of the minivan, resulting in the minivan striking him.

The minivan was later found in Joliet. Police said the victim was being treated for injuries to his lower body.

An arrest warrant was issued for Sears on charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated kidnapping, vehicular entry, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and battery. Police said Sears’ last known address was Shorewood, but he is believed to be homeless.

Silver Cross Hospital issued a statement saying: “You may have noticed police activity outside our hospital’s discharge room earlier this evening. At approximately 6:00 p.m., as the patient was being discharged home, an unarmed man illegally took over a vehicle and pushed the patient out. The patient is in the Emergency Department for non-life-threatening injuries.

“We are grateful to the New Lenox Police Department who conducted an on-scene investigation. Based on the information we have at this time, we believe there are no additional safety concerns related to this incident.

“Our security team immediately responded to the incident, secured the area, notified local law enforcement and continues to provide security support on our campus.
