Miami Dolphins make QB move, add WR to active roster

The Miami Dolphins made another series of roster changes on Friday that addressed the need for a new wide receiver on the active roster and (at least partially) the quarterback woes.

The Dolphins announced that they have placed quarterback Tyler Huntley on injured reserve following a shoulder injury he suffered in the third quarter of last Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

The team also signed practice squad wide winger Dee Eskridge to the active roster and took his place on the practice squad with the signing of midfielder Matt Dickerson.

Dickerson has played in 36 games (without starts) in five NFL seasons, most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs, for whom he played 12 games in 2023. He was released from the Chiefs’ practice squad on Aug. 31, three days after he was signed to the unit.

Eskridge will become the fifth winger on the active roster and will replace the returning Braxton Berrios, who was placed on injured reserve earlier this week due to a knee injury he suffered in the loss to Indianapolis.

Eskridge was promoted to the matchday squad twice and had one more left before he had to move to the 53rd squad to use him again in 2023.

While rookie sixth-round pick Malik Washington is expected to handle return punt duties with Berrios out, Eskridge could be the new kickoff returner. In four NFL seasons, he recorded 18 career kickoff returns, averaging 25.3 yards, and also had a 28-yard kickoff return for the Dolphins in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Before being placed on injured reserve, Huntley was one of five quarterbacks on the roster – including himself Tua Tagovailoa, who passed the concussion protocol and will be activated on Saturday.

The quarterbacks currently on the active roster are Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle, and rookie C.J. Beathard is on the practice squad.

Even by moving Huntley, the Dolphins could make another move (e.g. release Boyle) when they activate Tagovailoa. However, the need to develop a long snapper (Matt Overton) and a defensive tackle (likely Neil Farrell Jr.) may result in the Dolphins wanting to wait until next week for Boyle to become the emergency third-string quarterback against Arizona.

Time will tell what the Dolphins will do with Huntley once he is eligible to return from IR (injured reserve) after missing the next four games. Huntley will have to miss games against the Cardinals, Bills, Rams and Raiders, but will be allowed to come off IR during the Week 12 game against the New England Patriots at Hard Rock Stadium.
