Andruw Jones, former Braves player, is on the list no player wants to be on

With the 2024 World Series kicking off on Friday night, Bleacher Report published articles covering several World Series-related topics. One of the more intriguing was Tim Kelly list of 10 MLB players “We wish” won the World Series in their career.

The list includes only players from the previous generation. So people like Ted Williams and Don Mattingly didn’t make the list.

In the last 35 years, the Atlanta Braves have won two championships, with a 26-year gap between them. So most Braves legends over the last few decades have won a World Series.

Well, all of them except one – Andruw Jones. On October 24, Kelly included Jones on his list of 10 MLB players he “wish” would win a title.

“Jones has appeared in 76 postseason games in his career, including 75 as a member of the Braves,” Kelly wrote. “He homered 10 times and showed some of the best infield gloves the sport has ever seen. But Jones never won a World Series.”

Third baseman Chipper Jones was fortunate that his first full season with the Braves came when they won the 1995 title. So Chipper won a World Series ring.

However, Andruw made his debut only at the age of 19, in September 1996. He played in two World Series with the Braves, including his rookie season. But Atlanta lost both.

In 1996, Jones hit two home runs in his first World Series appearance, helping the Braves win Game 1 over the New York Yankees 12-1. The Braves returned home for Game 3 of the series with a 2-0 lead.

But the Yankees won the next four games, breaking the hearts of Braves fans. The four-game skid included blowing a 6-0 lead in game four, which could have given Atlanta a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Jones never came this close to winning the World Series again. In 1999, the Braves met again in the series against the Yankees. That same year, New York City engulfed Atlanta.

In 12 seasons with the Braves, Jones made five All-Star teams, won 10 Gold Gloves and won the Silver Slugger Award. He then finished his career playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Yankees.

Jones has played in every postseason game in his career except one in Atlanta. He played in his last playoff game with the Yankees in 2011.

Besides Jones, Kelly’s name Joey Votto, Jim Thome, Torri Hunter, Ken Griffey Jr., Roy Halladay, Johan Santana, Trevor Hoffman, Vladimir Guerrero and Adrian Beltré added to their list of players who “wish” to win a World Series during their careers.
