Investigation confirms data breach at Floyd County Public Schools

FLOYD COUNTY Va. (WDBJ) – Floyd County Public Schools reports the district has been hit by cybersecurity breach.

WDBJ7 first reported in September after receiving a tip from a concerned parent. This prompted our Target 7 team to contact Superintendent Jessica Cromer, who confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

Cromer said the school district is working with law enforcement agencies, including the Virginia State Police Cyber Fusion Center and the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Unit in Richmond, to determine the scope of the problem.

We already know that, like many schools across the country, the school district was the victim of a data breach.

On Friday, Cromer told WDBJ7 in an email that some personal information may have been compromised and accessible to cybercriminals. According to the district’s website, it may include information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers and medical records.

Floyd County Public Schools offers families free Kroll credit monitoring and identity restoration services.

FCPS reported that it received information about suspicious activity in August from law enforcement agencies. The school authorities report that thanks to their quick response, their systems were quickly secured.

Cromer currently told WDBJ7 he has no reason to believe anyone’s personal information is being used maliciously, but he is providing these free resources to put families at ease.
