Trump and Harris have a showdown in the Lone Star State

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Lone Star State’s clash took over the presidential race on Friday, with former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in Texas hours apart.

Trump released most of the day in Austintalking about immigration and then recorded a podcast episode with Joe Rogan.

Early voting is ongoing

Long lines formed outside Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium as more than a million people registered for Harris’ rally, where Beyonce was scheduled to appear. Willie Nelson also made a surprise appearance and performed in front of the audience.

Trump was in Austin on Friday to sit down and talk with popular podcaster Joe Rogan. This is his campaign’s attempt to reach a younger demographic.

But before the taping, he organized a rally at the Austin airport. He wasted no time attacking the vice president.

“Under Kamala Harris, Texas has become ground zero for the largest border invasion in world history. You’re lucky to have your governor,” Trump said.

His visit came just hours before the vice president’s visit stopped in Houston. Her stop focused on reproductive rights and was attended by several stars who showed support.

“There has been real suffering,” Harris said during a news conference before her rally Friday night. “People died. It is important to highlight this issue because it is one of the most important issues the American people will address when they vote for the next president of the United States.”

Trump criticizes Harris on immigration

Trump focused most of his airport speech on immigration.

“Over the past four years, this state has become a staging ground for Kamala, importing her army of migrant gangs and illegal alien criminals into every state in America. And every state is a border state. You heard it, it’s true,” Trump said.

The vice president returns fire

The vice president reacted sharply, citing rhetoric that she believed was harmful to America.

“Not someone like Donald Trump, who constantly demeans and disrespects who Americans are. America deserves better,” Harris said.

With early voting beginning and over a week left until the election, America’s next president will soon be elected.

Texas is not considered a battleground state, which is part of what makes Friday’s visits so interesting because both candidates are here so close to Election Day.
