MANHATTAN, Kan. (KCTV) – An 18- and 19-year-old from Lenexa is fighting for his life in a Topeka hospital after a motorcycle collision in Manhattan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol indicates that around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 25, emergency services were called to the area of ​​Highway 24 and Kimball Ave. with a report of a collision between two vehicles.

When first responders arrived, they found Thomas D. Shortle, 40, of Marysville, had stopped his 2011 Ford F-150 in the median, giving way to northbound vehicles, but the bed of the truck remained in the median. towards the south.

When Joel T. Scheuerman, 19, of Lenexa, rode his 2024 Kawasaki Z900 motorcycle over a hill, officers said he hit the floor of the pickup truck.

Emergency officials said Scheuerman and his passenger, Madeline N. Bona, 18, of Lenexa, were taken to the hospital. Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with life-threatening injuries. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

Law enforcement officials noted that Shortle and his passenger, 70-year-old Wendy C. Shortle of Marysville, escaped the crash uninjured. Both were wearing seat belts at the time.
