Rains in Tamil Nadu: Heavy downpour brings Madurai to a standstill, schools closed in 4 districts

Incessant rainfall brought Madurai to a standstill as many parts of the temple city faced flooding. The continuous downpour is disrupting daily life, causing hardship for commuters and residents.

Pictures shared by news agency ANI showed that residential areas and streets in Suriya Nagar were flooded with knee-deep water.

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has issued a heavy rainfall warning in four districts of Tamil Nadu, including Madurai. Other districts likely to experience heavy rain include Theni, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.

According to a report by Mathrubhumi, a holiday was declared in all government, aided and private schools in these four districts on Saturday following the weather forecast.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, forecasting heavy rainfall rainfall in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, October 26.

In its latest bulletin, the weather agency predicted light to moderate rainfall at several places accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning over Tamil Nadu in the next 2-3 days and then reducing thereafter.

According to the weather agency, the minimum temperature on October 25 was much above normal (1.6-3.0°C) at isolated places over Tamil Nadu.

Yellow alert has been released for several areas including Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar.

Moreover, the IMD has also predicted that light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning will occur at several places over Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep in the next 2-3 days.

Heavy rainfall was also predicted in Puducherry and Karaikal on October 26 and in Kerala and Mahe on October 26 and 27.

The Met Office has also not predicted that there will be no significant rainfall over northeast, central, eastern and northwest India during the week.
