Investigators say a store employee was killed during an argument over a pizza order

MILWAUKEE (WISN) – A man faces decades in prison for allegedly killing a Wisconsin store employee over a pizza party.

The suspect is being held in the Milwaukee County Jail on $200,000 bail.

Walking through the door of the corner store on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Keefe Avenue will never be the same for Mohammad Owais; returns to work after someone shoots his brother, who was also a young father.

“I told my brother, ‘Please, I need help for about an hour, an hour and a half.’ He told me, “I’ve got you,” recalls Mohammad Owais.

The store owner says Charles Leggett ordered a pizza at that time.

“My brother served him and gave him a ticket. He went to the guy in the back to make him a pizza. He gave him a ticket. I don’t think this guy was wearing gloves or anything,” Mohammad Owais said.

The worker who made the pizza is afraid of being identified, but said he’s “pretty sure” he wasn’t wearing gloves at the time.

“He went back to the front and argued with the front cashier and they started shouting at each other,” Mohammad Owais described. “And then I just hear a pop.”

Prosecutors say store surveillance footage shows an argument at the checkout, after which the gunman suddenly “puts a gun to Owais’ chest.” He shot and killed 26-year-old Jamil Owais.

“He shot him in the heart and he died soon after,” Mohammad Owais said.

Jamil Owais, 26, was shot during an apparent argument.

Palestinian immigrant Jamil Owais came to the United States in 2013, leaving behind his wife and young daughter.

“It’s a big loss. He’s a good guy. He is like my son when he came,” said Mohammad Owais. “He was a little boy. He grew up with me. That’s why this matter hurts me too much.”

If convicted, Leggett faces up to 75 years in prison.
