Popular Igbo Highlife musician shot dead by a police officer in Enugu

Renowned Nigerian highlife musician Okezie Mba, better known as “Igbo-Jah”, was fatally shot by a police inspector in Enugu Statesoutheastern Nigeria.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, October 25, at the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command, where Mba took part in the event.

As reported by Premium Times, eyewitnesses to the incident said that some police officers started shooting indiscriminately, one of whom hit Mba.

“They tried to take him to a nearby hospital, but he died on the way,” the source said.

The police confirm the arrest of the officer involved in the incident

In a statement dated Saturday, October 26 this year. Enugu State Police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the incident and the arrest of the inspector responsible.

Ndukwe, Assistant Superintendent of Policehe refrained from giving the name of the officer, stating only that he was an inspector serving in the Anticultism Tactical Unit.

The police said:

“Reports indicate that the musician was leaving the Branch headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be determined, a policeman fired his rifle, hitting the victim.

“He (Mba) was immediately taken to hospital, where the attending physician pronounced him dead. His body was placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

The police launch an investigation and express their condolences

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the state Department of Criminal Investigation to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that “appropriate disciplinary action” is taken against the officer involved, according to Vanguard.
