School strike in Berwick ends with union and council compromise

School strike in Berwick ends with union and council compromise

NASUWT officials have previously said plans to close grammar schools in Glendale, Tweedmouth and Berwick by 2026 would put 142 staff at risk and only 50-60 jobs would be available after the restructuring.

The move led to devastating strikes that began earlier this month.

Councilor Guy Renner Thompson of Northumberland County Council welcomed the cancellation of the strikes.

He said: “Parents in Berwick and across Northumberland will be relieved.

“It has always been our goal to employ as many people as possible and we have two years to achieve this goal.”

The reorganization comes ahead of a £50 million company-wide investment which will include new buildings for Berwick Academy.
