WL choir students are preparing to perform at Radio City Music Hall

Two years ago, when the Washington-Liberty High School choir department traveled to New York City, students had the opportunity to tour Municipal Radio Music Hall and even stand on its famous stage.

Now they are preparing to perform on it.

WL students and teachers will travel to New York during the holiday season in what can be described as a once-in-a-lifetime musical opportunity.

As part of the trip, which will start on December 20, students will sing in both Radio City, where they will inaugurate their performance A Christmas show featuring the Rockettesand at St. Cathedral Patrickthe largest Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States.

“We are all focused on performing at Radio City and experiencing New York during the holiday season,” said Theresa Severin, who serves as director of choral activities and is performing arts department chair in high school.

“After 27 years at Washington-Liberty and 31 years in Arlington Public Schools, I can say that performing at Radio City Music Hall is an important moment – for me and our students,” Severin told ARLnow. “This opportunity is not just about place. This is a unique and unforgettable experience that will inspire our students and highlight their hard work.

During the trip, students will also tour the city, take part in a choreography workshop with a “Hamilton” cast member, and watch him perform on stage later that evening.

Not surprisingly, the planned trip was very popular among Washington-Liberty students.

  • Allie Coughlin, soprano in the Advanced Choir: “It will be great to sing with the Rockettes and be with my friends in New York for Christmas.”
  • Bellum McPhillips-DeFilippi, tenor in the Chamber Choir: “Very excited about the trip! It’s a great opportunity to sing at Radio City and I can’t wait.”
  • Apollo Crenshaw, alto in the chamber choir: “We will be able to spend time with friends, see the city and experience the experience of performing on this professional stage. “I’m terrified, but I’m very excited.”
  • Matthew Heim, bass in the Chamber Choir: “In our first year we sang in the church of St. John of God. Listening to this recording meant everything to me. Now we have the opportunity to sing at St. Patrick’s Day and make more memories with my friends.”

In past years, the choral department has used school candy bar sales to support its field trips, but the school system no longer allows such field trips. Instead, organizers are reaching out to the public, and they already have set up a financing website to help with transportation costs and make your trip possible.

“Singing on this stage will be a special memory and we are so grateful for the support that helped us achieve this,” Severin said.
