Navy officer opens fire on colleagues in ‘questionable circumstances’ – details emerge

Tragic news from Katsinawhere on Friday, October 25, a naval officer identified as Chief Seaman Akila A fatally shot a colleague. According to Edward Buba, director of defense media operations, the incident occurred under “questionable circumstances” and the officer opened fire sporadically.

The Defense Command took over fast taking action, arresting and detaining the officer and initiating an investigation into the incident. The military said that once the investigation is complete, the case will be transferred to a permanent military court, which typically deals with misconduct among soldiers.

The army is contacting the family of the killed officer

In the meantime, the family of the deceased is being notified through official channels. Defense Command urged the media to report responsibly, taking into account the sensitivity of the situation and the potential impact on the bereaved family.

The military statement reads in part:

“Meanwhile, administrative proceedings are underway to notify the family of the deceased,” he added.

The Nigerian Army and Insecurity

The Nigerian Army has been involved in several war fronts as the country grapples with myriad insecurity, including terrorism in the North West, banditry and kidnapping in the North West, and North Central secessionist agitation in the South of the country, among others.

Additionally, the military has recorded recent successes, particularly in the killings of some bandit leaders, including Kachalla Halilu Sububu and Kachalla Baleri Fakai.
