Public education advocates gather to campaign against Amendment 2

GAMING, Ky. (WYMT) – With the election approaching, many groups continue to campaign for voter support.

One important issue on the November ballot is Amendment 2, which focuses on school funding.

Public education advocates gathered at the Appalachian Arts Alliance in Hazard as part of the Protect Our Schools KY #VoteNOon2 homestretch tour.

Kentucky Education Association President Eddie Campbell said his experience in the public school system encouraged him to advocate for providing public schools with all the resources they need.

“As a public school educator, I am a huge supporter of our public schools,” Campbell said. “As a child of public schools, I know what public schools do to change students’ lives every day. Therefore, ensuring that our public schools are fully equipped and that teachers are there to greet students every day is important for every community. Our public schools are the heart and soul of every community across the commonwealth.”

Educators and advocates spoke about the importance of the public school system and said issue two deprives public schools of key resources.

Supporters on the other side of the issue say it’s about supporting Kentucky parents in controlling their children’s education and the right to choose a school that reflects their values.
